Remembering Bishop Carlton Pearson: A Beacon of Love, Light, and Inclusion
As the end of the year approaches, we pay tribute to a monumental figure in the Christian community, particularly within the black church, who has sadly left us. Bishop Carlton Pearson, a man whose journey and teachings have been both a beacon of hope and a subject of controversy, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023, surrounded by his family. As we reflect on his life and legacy, it is impossible not to acknowledge the profound impact he had on so many lives.
Born in San Diego, California, Carlton Pearson grew up in a vibrant family of eight. His path to spiritual leadership began at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he majored in Bible Literature in English. His early years were marked by a rising prominence within the Pentecostal community, serving as an Associate Evangelist for the Oral Roberts Association and contributing significantly to the Oral Roberts University as a member of its Board of Regents.
In 1977, Pearson founded Higher Dimensions Inc., and later, a church in Tulsa in 1981, which under his leadership, grew to an impressive membership of 5,000. His commitment to social issues was evident through the church's numerous outreach programs, including support for single mothers, ex-offenders, and troubled youth.
Bishop Pearson's influence was not confined to his church walls. His annual Azusa conference became a cornerstone event, drawing as many as 50,000 attendees from various backgrounds and providing a platform for emerging Christian leaders and artists. His musical talent, recognized with a Stellar Award, saw millions of his recordings sold, underlining his impact on contemporary Christian music.
Beyond his accomplishments, what truly set Bishop Pearson apart was his radical theology of inclusion. He stirred the waters of traditional Christian doctrine with his proclamation that no soul would be condemned to eternal hell – a belief that resonated with many but also brought him severe criticism and loss. Yet, through these trials, his commitment to a message of unconditional love and acceptance never wavered.
Carlton Pearson's dedication to inclusivity extended beyond his church. He was actively involved in various charitable and humanitarian organizations, including the Interfaith Alliance and the Human Rights Campaign. His teachings emphasized the importance of interfaith dialogue and fellowship, challenging traditional norms and advocating for a spirituality that embraced all, regardless of race, sexuality, or belief system.
His life story, encapsulating his theological shift and commitment to radical inclusion, was poignantly portrayed in the Netflix original movie "Come Sunday." This film not only highlights his personal journey but also his unwavering dedication to spreading a message of universal love and acceptance.
As we mourn his passing, we celebrate the legacy Bishop Carlton Pearson leaves behind – a legacy characterized by love, light, and the courage to challenge norms for a more inclusive and compassionate world. His teachings remind us that our differences do not have to divide us and that in embracing diversity, we find our true strength. Bishop Pearson's life was a testament to the power of love over doctrine, and his message continues to inspire us to build a world where everyone is welcomed, valued, and loved.
